The #1 Question

What is the best brand?

By far the most common question I'm asked.  And it is a fair question.  Companies spend millons of dollars marketing their product and brand.  Salesmen will show you many different charts proving that their brand is the best.  You'll find endless debates online.  In fact most service technicians even have that one brand they like, and the one they just can't stand.  I know I do.  However, let's put that all aside and consider the facts.

There is no difference in technology from one brand to another.  Sure, some brands may have features that others don't, but that doesn't change the fact that they all are essentially the same.  With furnaces, everyone has the top of the line 97% efficient furnace, a selection of 96% efficient furnaces with various features, a selection of 80% efficient furnaces with various features, as well as that basic, low cost 80% efficient furnace.  The same is true with air conditioners.  In fact, all these brands are more similar than most people realize.  Did you know that for most brands, the control systems like the gas valves, control boards, and motors are all produced by a third party company, like Honeywell, Robershaw, or White Rodgers?  For the most part, air conditioners have Copeland compressors.  Also the warranties are pretty much the same as well.  Most companies provide Lifetime heat exchanger warranties on their high end furnaces and 20 year heat exchanger warranties on basic furnaces.  Parts warranties are generally 10 years.  Compressor warranties on air conditioners are also generally 10 years.

Also, another thing that many people dont realize is that some different brands of are actually owned by the same parent company.  For example, did you know that Goodman and Amana are owned by the same company, Daikin?  Trane and American Standard are both owned by Ingersoll Rand.  Rheem also makes Ruud.  Carrier also makes Bryant and Payne.  Many times the only difference beteween these brands is the sticker or badge on the front.

So how do you choose?  The key is actually not what brand you get, but who you get to install it.  Even the most highly rated, "top of the line" brand equipment will have efficiency and reliability issues if it is not sized, installed, and adjusted properly at the initial start-up.  No matter what brand you get, if it is installed properly from the beginning, and regulary maintained, you can have a piece of equipment that will give you years of reliable service.  Thats not to say you will never have an issue.  Even with the best brand, components will wear out, and things can break.  So you also want to know you will have a company that will be around when you need them.
